Art Deco: A Modern Vision. Celebrating 100 Years

8 November 2025

to 31 January 2026

Step back in time to the Roaring 20s and 30s when the sophisticated lines of Art Deco takes centre stage at David Roche Gallery in the exhibition Art Deco: A Modern Vision, from Saturday 8 November to Saturday 31 January, 2026.

Discover the origins of Art Deco, its global journey, and how it became part of everyday Australian life, as the iconic style celebrates 100 years of glamour, innovation, and design. From its extraordinary debut in 1920s Paris to its lasting influence on Australian art and architecture, Art Deco is a highly influential and distinctive style of visual arts, architecture and design that emerged in France before World War I and flourished internationally in the 1920s and 1930s.

The Art Deco celebrating 100 years exhibition is thoughtfully laid out with 180 works from public and private collections, guiding visitors through a curated journey within each of the gallery spaces:

  • Gallery 1: Learn about the launch of Art Deco in France and Europe through a selection of furniture, paintings and decorative arts including a display of striking glass by Lalique.
  • Gallery 2: Discover how the Art Deco style was embedded in the idea of internationalism through vintage travel posters, a vintage motorcycle, Australian and European fashion, and ceramics of that period.
  • Gallery 3: See how the style arrived in Australia, exploring how people designed and furnished cinemas through to their homes in architectural drawings and objects.

David Roche Gallery Curator Timothy Roberts says Art Deco is more than just sleek lines and geometric design, it was a design movement that transformed the world. “We are thrilled to present this celebratory exhibition and we invite visitors to explore the timeless legacy of Art Deco,” he says. “It truly encompassed all decorative and applied arts from architecture, interior design, transporation, and fashion and jewellery. We look forward to sharing this visual journey and offer art enthusiasts an insight into this transformative world.”
