Presented here is a very impressive pair of extraordinarily long brass framed, boxlock, flintlock pistols made around 1780 and probably intended for shipboard use.
The bore at the slightly-flared muzzle measures .70 caliber and the distance from the muzzle to the touch hole measures 8 ½ inches. The overall length of the pistols is a touch over 14 inches.
The frames are engraved with stands of arms and ‘I HALL’ on the left side and ‘LONDON’ on the right. The breaches bear Birmingham private proofs.
The actions, with sliding safeties, are in good working order.
The slab sided grips are in a very good used condition with an excellent metal to wood fit, far superior to that found on most boxlocks.
To be honest, this is the largest pair of boxlock pistols I have handled to date!
