Antique black and gold Satsuma vase

An incredibly elegant vintage, possibly antique black and gold Satsuma vase, circa late Taisho to early Showa Period (1920s to 1930s). Made by Soko China of Kobe, the westernised trade name for 湊光 (Minato Hikari). Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867.

This vase is beautifully handpainted in gilt with temples, houses, a bridge and in the background the beautiful mountains of Japan.

Excellent condition. 25.5 cm high.
