Simple Décor is based on my passion and zeal to find objects that reflect the uniqueness of our world. Simple Décor is found within the beautiful Art Deco building at Mayfield – the Coliseum. Also to be found at a number of fairs in NSW, Canberra, Victoria and South East Queensland.
My father introduced me to Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen’s Regency world as a young girl and this was the beginning of my love for the period. Therefore you will find at Simple Décor: Miniatures, Silhouettes, Georgian Glass and the beautiful Blue and White Transfer ware and thrown in amongst all this maybe a set of Sovereign Scales. In other words, I search out for all aspects of life from this period.
But as I have been exposed to the world of antiques I have discovered the joy of the different eras. The curves and asymmetry of Art Nouveau are one of my favourites, which led me onto the European Jugendstil and then the juxtaposition of Art Deco. Throughout the shop can be found items from these periods.
I also enjoy needlecraft, so you’ll find samplers (an 18th century one that shows the literacy of girls), embroidery (the craftsmanship of the silk embroidery shown in a piano shawl or Cantonese ceremonial hangings is breathtaking) and needlecraft tools and sewing boxes made from ivory vegetable, ivory, mother-of-pearl, silver and wood – all to be found at Simple Décor.
Religion through the ages is an area where human endeavour has sought to produce artefacts that reflect the Glory of One’s God. Each religion brings its own artefacts. The simplicity of Icons, Santos Figures, Crosses and Buddhas gives each their own beauty. I seek to find objects that my clients can enjoy and relate to.
Being so close to Asia, we are lucky to be able to seek and discover their art. The ceramics and metal work are exquisite. I am overawed by the delicacy of the Japanese fine workmanship that is shown in the carving of netsukes and okimonos… I have been lucky to find many beautiful Asian pieces to tempt my clients.
