Antique rocking horse restoration by Wood I Build It

Rocking Horse Restoration

Rocking horses have been loved and treasured by children and adults throughout many cultures since time immemorial. The first children’s rocking horses of the style most recognised are recorded from the 17th century, generally as a child’s toy as evidence of their family’s status and wealth.

An antique rocking horse today, whether simple or elaborately crafted, is a valued investment. Whether a treasured family heirloom, a unique and wonderful toy for a child,  a design exhibit for a historic home, museum or gallery, or perhaps simply a perfect design feature for your home or showroom.

Every antique rocking horse deserves to be preserved and protected for historic record and the pleasure of adults and children alike.

Your rocking horse restoration can be a partial or complete including repairs to broken or cracked limbs, head, neck or other joints and the removal of lead-based paint.

With numerous coats of primer and finish coats of lead-free paint, the horse can be restored to reflect its original decoration.

Only the highest quality materials available are utilised, including hair-on-the-hide for the mane, tail and forelock.  Real leather for saddles, stirrups, bridles and reins are enhanced by matching or complimentary leather-trimmed tartan saddle clothes.

Polished brass hardware is used for swing iron brackets, stirrups, bits and bowler hats.

Restorations also include fine attention to the stand which often requires a total reconstruction and repaint.

Our beautifully restored and repaired antique rocking horses always receive an emotional “welcome back” from their happy owners, or delight in the craftsmanship from curators, set designers and exhibitors.

We look forward to restoring and renewing your own antique rocking horse.
