An almost mint example of an officer’s percussion pistol by Alexander Thomson of Edinburgh and made around 1840. Alexander came from a long line of armourers dating back to the early 1600s. It is believed that Alexander took over the business after the death of his father, George in 1832.
The .65 calibre, smoothbore, Damascus barrel with attached rammer measures 8 ½ inches with the whole pistol measuring 14 inches. The barrel, with its beautiful Damascus colour, has an octagonal breech and a top flat engraved ‘ALEX, R THOMSON. EDINBURGH.’. The bore is pristine.
The forward-facing lock has foliate, engraving and is marked ‘ALEX, R THOMSON’. The lock still retains much original, case hardening colour and is in excellent working order.
The butt with cap trap, trigger guard with pineapple final and rammer entry pipe, are all engraved and retain most of their charcoal fired blueing. See photos.
The fine full-length walnut stock features a horn nose cap, silver vacant wrist echelon and a finely chequered grip. The stock shows a few very minor handling marks. Again, see photos.
All-in-all an exceptional Scottish pistol.
