Antique book, The Strangers Guide to Sydney 1862, including Sydney town street map.
First published by James Waugh in 1858. Waugh, an immigrant who arrived in Australia in 1840 and opened a bookselling business in Sydney in the early 1850s, wrote in his preface that he saw a gap in the market: ‘The want of a cheap and portable Guide, for the use of strangers visiting Sydney, induced the Publisher to get up this little work’.
The information is arranged into a series of walks ‘in order that those who have but a short time to spend in town, may have an opportunity of seeing as much of it as possible’.
The second edition of the book is almost double the size of the first.
