A good condition, large bore, percussion, coat pistol from Manton & Co of Calcutta, India made around 1840.
The .65 caliber, sighted, octagonal, smoothbore, Damascus barrel measures 3 ¾ inches with the whole pistol measuring 9 inches. The barrel with swivel rammer, bears London proofs and is clearly engraved ‘Manton & Co Calcutta’. It also appears to have been re-browned.
The frame, hammer, barrel tang and breech are tastefully engraved with floral motifs. The serial number ‘4033’ is engraved on the barrel tang. There is also a belt hook affixed to the left side of the frame.
While the main spring is strong the action does not hold full cock.
The very finely, chequered, walnut grip also features a butt trap. The silver wrist echelon is crudely engraved with ‘FM’. The grip does show some handling marks.
