Stunning ceramic punch pot, England c.1750

$4,500

Punch began to be drunk in Britain from the 1650s and was usually served from large bowls using a ladle. Around the 1750s it began to be served from a ceramic punch pot. Punch pots are distinguished from teapots by their decoration and by their size.

It has been suggested that placing punch in this familiar type of vessel removed the threat of bad behaviour often associated with the drink.

The relief of grapes is typical for items associated with alcohol for the period. England, c.1750.

A great joy to find an example in such good condition that it still retains most of its gilding. It looks unused.
