From one-day courses to long-term learning that results in industry qualifications, the Gemmological Association of Australia offers anyone with an interest in gemstones and gemmology the opportunity to learn more.
The introductory courses are designed for the beginner wanting to gain an understanding into the wonderful world of gemmology, and they cover everything from an overview of gems and gemmology to a more detailed look at coloured gemstones, minerals, pearls and opals.
Practical courses are designed for the student who wants to develop their hand skills in a workshop or laboratory environment. You will learn real and practical skills from experts in their field, including gem handling, pearl threading and diamond grading. There’s a practical course tailored specifically to antiques lovers, with an antique jewellery workshop where you can also use examples from your own collection.
Advanced courses delve further into subjects that include rare and unusual gemstones, laboratory grown diamonds and synthetic and treated gemstones. The jewellery industry courses are open to anyone but are especially suited to those working in or looking to find work in the jewellery industry, and the diploma courses, which are undertaken over a period of up to two years, involve practical and theoretical components with assessments including assignments, research and examinations.
