There will be plenty to do if the weekend of August 2 and 3 turns out to be chilly or wet… or both… as so often can happen in a Melbourne winter!
The weekend events kick off with Fashion on the Catwalk: 100 Years of Art Deco: A Fashion Parade Through Time at 11.45am on Saturday August 2. Marking 100 years since the movement’s defining moment in 1925, this dazzling fashion parade showcases how the bold glamour of the Art Deco era shaped style from its origins to the present day.
That’s followed by Legends of Glass by Geoffrey Edwards at 1pm. President of ArtsNational, Geoffrey Edwards presents an illustrated lecture that identifies and discusses ten influential figures, some historical and others modern, whose innovations, specialisation or characteristic styles are synonymous with key moments and milestones in the story of glass as an art form.
Then at 2.15pm there’s Fashion on the Catwalk: Coats & Bling – A Fashion Parade Through the Decades that celebrates the evolution of outerwear from the 1920s to today. From the opulent fur-trimmed coats of the Jazz Age to the sleek, statement-making designs of modern fashion, this event showcases how coats have defined elegance through the decades.
And you won’t want to miss the Best Dressed in Vintage Competition at 3.15pm, for a celebration of vintage elegance with a prize awarded for Vintage Purist (original vintage clothing).
On Sunday August 3 at 12 noon, jewellery historian and scholar Hayden Peters presents Evolution of 19th and 20th Jewellery – Arts and Crafts to Art Deco, discussing the evolution of 19th and 20th century jewellery through the Arts and Crafts movement to Art Nouveau, as the language of Art Deco jewellery emerges.
