Roses at the Hill

If you love both flowers and antiques we’ve got the perfect event for you…

The Rose in Art is showing at the historic Carrick Hill in South Australia until November 30. Tracing the cultural life of the rose from ancient myth to modern icon, the exhibition explores the powerful symbolism of the rose from religious art and genre painting to high fashion and pop culture—from the worship of Aphrodite to the iconic Barbie.

It features classical sculpture, still life painting and contemporary art, with highlights such as Meissen porcelain, Henri Fantin-Latour and Elsa Schiaparelli as well as a series of rose-themed events.

And if you happen to visit on Friday August 22, you can also enjoy the Carrick Hill Antiques Roadshow! Presenters Timothy Roberts (curator at the David Roche Foundation), James Bruce (from Australia’s oldest family-run auction house) and Dr Ellen Whitton (curator of the Carrick Hill collection) will be joined by MC Richard Heathcote (former director of Carrick Hill). Each expert will present three pieces to the audience – but as per their show’s namesake, they will attempt to lead you up the antique dealer’s path to throw you off the scent of the real value of the best pieces. Then it’s up to you to test your knowledge and choose in order: which is Good, Better and Best.

Carrick Hill is at 46 Carrick Hill Drive, Springfield, SA 5062. For information call 08 7424 7900 or go to carrickhill.sa.gov.au

In 2018 the glass artist Dale Chihuly created a tower of glass roses outside the New Orleans Botanical Gardens (it’s not part of the Carrick Hill exhibition, but fantastic nevertheless…)
