Pūtātara were historically used for communicating over long distances, for example, to announce arrivals or signal warnings. They were highly valued as heirlooms within chiefly families. Triton shells are particularly prized due to its rarity in NZ. Traditionally made from a large conch or triton shell, typically with a carved wooden mouthpiece attached to the tip of the shell.
